The lodge was bought by John Blandy in the mid-19th century and not only was it an extremely valuable property but was also very useful due to the fact that it was directly connected to the family's town house.
Each one of the Lodge's rooms has its own character and due to the differing temperatures and humidity, the wines all have differing ageing profiles based on their location. The eastern warehouse holds wine dating back to 1920 and the family's private vintage collection is held within thick stone walls, below the ground floor. The museum holds artefacts which include letters from Sir. Winston Churchill, tokens from Blandy's bank and the island's oldest wooden lagar, dating back to the 17th century.
Murals from the renowned German artist, Max Römer, illustrate the traditional Madeiran harvest in the main tasting room where a wide range of the company's wines are kept.

Madeira is a fortified wine produced and bottled in the Island of Madeira. The uniqueness of Madeira lies in its production method, which combined with the wines' remarkable freshness gives places to wines that are virtually indestructible. Vinic alcohol is added to the must when fermentation reaches the desired degree of un-fermented residual sugar, arresting fermentation. The wine is then transferred to ageing. This secular and unsual practice came into being after it was found that Madeira and the Far East in sailing ships ships during the 17th and 18th centuries.
